Research is discovering the many health benefits that wholegrain cereal foods offer, particularly in reducing the risk of diseases such as coronary heart disease, cancer and diabetes.

Wholegrain is a rich source of many essential vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals and consists of, as the name suggests the “Whole Grain” Bran – the outer layer of the grain, Endosperm – the main part of the grain, Germ – the smallest part of the grain Refining a grain to produce white flour removes nearly all of the bran and germ leaving only the endosperm. Typically this process can cause 66 per cent loss of fibre, 92 per cent loss of selenium, 62 per cent loss of folate and up to 99.8 per cent of phytochemicals from the grains.

As an added benefit wholegrains are very low GI, which is what nutritionist are recommending we look for in our diet. However the most important fact about our Wholegrain Spelt bread is its great taste, something you will remember long after you have forgotten all of its health benefits.

Wholemeal Ancient Grain contains all the healthy ingredients present in our standard Ancient Grain but is made with wholemeal spelt and wholemeal Khorasan flour.

Nutritionists are strongly recommending that we look for low GI foods in our diet, that is, foods that slowly release glucose into your blood stream keeping your energy levels balanced, meaning you will feel fuller for longer between meals.

If you look at what characterises a low GI food, it is a food that is less processed, contains wholemeal or wholegrains has lots of seeds uses stoneground flour and is made with sourdough.

Khorasan grown only organically in Australia. Khorasan is one of the ancient grains recently introduced into today’s contemporary diets. Our bread has a rich buttery taste that has a natural sweetness without any bitter aftertaste. The loaf possesses a fine, almost cake like texture and has a light amber colour. It can be toasted, made into sandwiches or used for dips, but is delightful just served on its own without any accompaniment. Khorasan has gained good acceptance with children, as they love the natural sweetness and texture of this bread. Khorasan has 20-40% more protein than normal breads, a higher mineral and vitamin content and is easily digestible. Not only does it taste great it’s “healthy”.

Wholemeal flour is 100% extraction meaning it retains all parts of the original grain including the fibre rich bran, the germ and endosperm.
